Rockin’ in the Pasture

Literally.

Yeah, this week we had a bunch more rock delivered.

I think it’s pea gravel.

So, today we had the tractor out and were truckin’ gravel around to the edges of the pasture where my sweet sheeps tend to wear down paths and expose the bottom edge of the fence. Gotta keep that fenceline tight!

Re-rocked right around the boys’ shed and playground (rockpile), too. Hopefully that will prevent it from getting muddy once the rains start.

Also picked the last of the apples off our big King apple tree today-

It wasn’t a great year for apples here, but we managed to pull in about 7 boxes-
Any that hit the ground got pitched into the pasture, to see if the boys would give them a try.

They are a little slow to try new things, but it appears there has been some nibbling…

We were scheduled to give the guys a pedicure this weekend, but I couldn’t manage to get any more than three of them in the shed at one time, so we eventually gave up and decided to reschedule.

Frank was being a big scared-y sheep. He had everybody all worked up and suspicious.
This is about as close as I got to the crazy bugger all day long

Shear Luck?

Nope. None here.
I had great hopes of getting little Chone sheared this weekend,

but he’s a wiley little bugger. And it’s like he knew what I was up to.

I tried plying him with apple branches, and nice sweet-smelling hay, but I just couldn’t get the guy within arms reach.

Oh well, perhaps it’s not meant to be.

In other news, I’ve made great progress with The Shepherd’s vest since it’s last appeared on the blog.

Just about ready to start shaping the v-neck. So, I’m in the homestretch on this one!

And I’ve got the first weaving experiment off the loom,

Ovine Artifacts

Cleaning out the sheep shed today and found a couple of objects of interest in the sofa cushions, so to speak-

Felix’s recently shed mini-horn.

What I find so interesting about this is that it’s all hollow inside- where there was another little horn right behind it. That’s kind of neat. It did bleed some, though. That’s how I’d noticed that he’d lost it Friday morning.

And someone’s regurgitated CoSeCure bolus.

So I’m only 4 for 5 (as far as I know).
No telling who coughed it up. Oh well.

Have made fairly good progress on the vest this week, but it became very clear by the time that I finished the fronts

that I wasn’t going to have enough Huey left for the whole back.

So, off I went to the stash to see what might work.

Among all the skeins of handspun that I have hanging around, I have a few that would have been a nice color complement, and another couple that might have worked texture-wise, but nothing that was the right weight.

Amazing.

Water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.

The solution: Back to the wheel!

Texture-wise, I figured that Frank’s long, wavy rear-end fleece would probably be the best match.
My thinking- spin the long silky locks into a nice low-twist single, that I could then chain ply into a soft, lofty aran-weight yarn.

Thankfully, I already had a batch washed up!

And I think that the creamy white looks really sporty with the caramel-y Huey hues.

That’s a solid base hit to center, scoring Huey from third.
