This weekend we had 2 days of beautiful weather- which means I am almost too pooped to blog. But I had to put up some photos to document the fact that Spring Has Arrived (finally). Some of the things springing up around here—

Even though the blog has been focused mostly on new fleece acquisitions in recent weeks, I have been getting some knitting in-

Presenting Miami socks and coordinating Tassel Hat (which you’d probably never have a need for in Miami):

And Roman Holiday socks:

Roman Holiday socks are so named because a friend of mine went to Rome in March and brought me back two beautiful balls of Italian 8ply merino superwash wool as a souvenir!

Wool. Always the perfect gift.

Anyway, I carried the Italian wool around with me for a while, trying to figure out how I wanted to use the two colors together, then I just made up what I think is kind of a cool pattern. Here it is a little closer:

I almost think I like the wrong side better, though-

I think they’re going to be pretty schnazzy.

In other news, we did some more work on the fencing this weekend-

And while it is exhausting work,, I’m mighty pleased to be doing it. Each H-brace brings me a little closer to having sheep.

You may know that last week I scored big on bargain wool.

Big BFL (I think) fleece.
Lovely stuff. And not my usual breed, so it got priority billing on the blog.

But I did come home with one other, as well.
Here is my other happy bargain fleece, a nice sized Shetland (maybe lamb?) in gray/taupe/brown.

I do so love the multicolored ones.

So here are some more photos:

I lost a lot of the dark brown in skirting it, as a lot of that was really short (and/or cruddy). Actually, I find the lighter color- the gray/taupe- really beautiful.

And a little random sample I knit up-

Sorry there’s nothing in there to provide scale. It’s about 6 stitches/inch. Got a really nice silky feel, too. Probably a little too short to comb effectively,, so I’ll end up carding or just flicking this guy.

Guess I’d better get busy, eh?

Saturday I acquired some bargain wool.

Now, you have to be really careful when you are presented with an opportunity to pick up bargain wool.

At $1/pound, sometimes you’re tempted to take home some things that you really shouldn’t. Some things that will just drive you insane as you attempt to wash and comb and card them into a spinnable form.

But every once in a while, you get lucky.

Now, I don’t know for certain what kind of wool this is,, but I have a guess.

Anyone with fleece experience is encouraged to chime in here,, but I’m thinking that this is a BFL or BFLx.

All said, its about 7 inches in length. But the tips are matted, and not worth trying to comb out,so I’m trimming them off and just using The Good Stuff.

The Good Stuff is still about 3-4 inches long. Very workable.

And, I tell you what. (dramatic pause)

It is just heaven to spin.

Fine, and soft, and silky, and bouncy.

Refined and luminous.

And I have a whole sheep’s worth.

Guess who got a package this week.

Yep. That would be me!

And in that package was a nice little Friesian fleece from Gretchen, of Gretchen’s Wool Mill. Yea!

Friesians are the Cadillac of milk sheep, and are also known for their prolificacy . You can read about more about them here.

I’d never worked with Friesian wool before,, so was mighty anxious to give it a spin (so to speak).

So, here is my experience so far-

The wool in it’s raw state:

It ranges from about 3-4 inches in length. (Gretchen told me it’s usually a bit longer, but they sheared early this year.) Isn’t very greasy, and has a nice bit of crimp. This one is nice and clean,  with no veg to speak of.

Here it is after a bit of a wash-

Bright white, and now you can see the luster. It “floofed” out quite a bit in the wash, but the tips remained intact, so it was fairly easy to sort it back out into locks and ditch any short bits.

Flick carded, spun, plied-

And swatched-

It’s a nice strong, sweater wool of medium fineness, I would say.  Has a nice bounce and body to it, and is lustrous, but not silky.

A very satisfying new wool experience.  Should be fun to play with.

Ps: And on a completely unrelated note, I wanted to share with any of you who have dogs, and who might ever have a need to use one of those horrible elizabethan collars for a post-surgical recuperation that THERE IS INDEED A BETTER OPTION.
